Gulf Shores Alabama

HISTORY
Before the 1930s, the only way to reach the snow-white beaches of Gulf
Shores was by water. That all changed in 1933 when the Intercoastal Waterway was created which separated the Gulf Coast of Alabama from the mainland. Development was sporadic for decades and the coast enjoyed
relative anonymity until Hurricane Frederic crushed through in 1979 destroying nearly everything in its path.
Today, you will see little of the old beach as development has been
rampant. The crown jewel of the Alabama State Park system is the Gulf
State Park which is slated for a massive renovation when the legislature
provides the funding. This 615-acre gem includes 2.5 miles of
undeveloped beaches, miles of hiking and biking trails, hotel-resort,
campgrounds and cabins, three lakes for freshwater fishing or canoeing,
tennis courts and more. It is worth a visit even if you are staying in a
nearby condo.
History buffs will enjoy visits to nearby Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines
which offer tour guides and lecturers.
