Pensacola's
former mayor, Vince Whibbs, was famous for his shameless and proud
promotion of Pensacola. He regularly recited the mantra that Pensacola
was a place where "thousands live where millions wish they
could".
A storied
history that includes rule under five flags in its 400+ years,
Pensacola seems to have it all: a thriving historical district,
blossoming arts community, emerging sports community and of course the
greatest treasure of all: beautiful white beaches. Famous as the home
of the Navy's precision flight show team "Blue Angels", the
military plays an integral part of the area's economy and flavor. You
can see sailors proudly strolling the streets in their Navy white's
and National Museum of Naval Aviation is one of Pensacola's biggest
tourism draws.
The beach areas
at Perdido Key and Pensacola Beach feature miles and miles of National Seashore where visitors can find
plenty of parking and secluded sunbathing. Pensacola promotes itself
as a family destination throughout the year. As more and more people
retire, Pensacola has become an increasingly popular destination for
"Snowbirds" and former military who find their way to the
area's temperate climate for a winter stay. The world-famous travel
guru "Frommer's" recently touted the area as a top budget
destination. Accommodations run the gamut from mom and pop-type hotels
to luxurious Gulf-front beach homes and condos.
