Long before the
masses of college Spring Breakers discovered Panama City it was the
favorite play place of Southerners for decades and a wintering nest
for Canadians. The areas 27 miles of beach still boasts an old Florida
feel, but with modern attractions. The area retains the largest block
of "mom and pop" hotels on the northern Gulf Coast. Tucked
in between the smaller, older hotels are modern condominiums and newer
brand name hotels. Scattered along the coast are campgrounds and newer
RV resorts. The beach's west end boasts a half dozen or more religious
"retreat" oriented hotel complexes. Panama City simply
offers something for all budgets.
This area has
always had its share of funky t-shirt shops, amusement parks and putt
putt golf courses. Today it also boasts championship golf courses,
million dollar yachts and some of the best snorkeling, diving and
fishing on the coast.
Located about an
hour from Florida State and Florida A&M Universities, it has
always been the getaway destination for the college students. Only in
recent years since the cable music channel MTV chose to broadcast live
in the area have so many college
students trekked to the area. Winter "Snowbirds" have always
been an important part of the area economy keeping the beach
businesses going during the slower season.
