About Tallahassee
Tallahassee is best known as Florida's state capitol - and for its nationally prominent Florida State Seminoles. Tallahassee's history intertwines with its governmental background. Changes in Florida's Capitol over the years have reflected the growth of the state. In the early 1820s, legislators transferred government business from St. Augustine to Pensacola for alternating sessions. Travel was hazardous and took almost twenty days - clearly an unsatisfactory arrangement. As a result, Tallahassee was chosen as the capital of American Florida in 1824, primarily because it was the midway point between the two principal cities. Tallahassee's landscape is characterized by lush rolling hills, moss draped oaks and magnificent plantations. During the Civil War, Tallahassee was the only uncaptured rebel capital east of the Mississippi. Several plantation houses, the newly restored capital building and the Museum of Florida History reflect the city's heritage. A great deal of the appeal of Tallahassee is that it retains its youthful spirit, despite its history. Florida State University, home of the Seminoles, is the second largest university in the state. The city is brimming with school spirit, and football season is a colorful and exciting time to visit when there is a game in town. With college students in town, nightlife is far from lacking. Tallahassee features a wide variety of shopping and dining opportunities in a community best known for its Southern style and hospitality.
