Nature lovers have
plenty of space to explore the thousands of acres
of land set aside for public recreation. Golf,
tennis, fishing, boating and water sports are
popular and plentiful activities for vacationers
and residents. Beyond
the area's natural beauty and recreational
pursuits, the biggest attraction is the
friendliness of its people. Here strangers are
greeted with a nod and a smile. Southern accents
and old world manners prevail. Cars stop along
the route of a funeral. But along with nature and
friendliness of its people, the region also
includes many cosmopolitan pursuits. The Arts and
Theater are well represented with Pensacola and
Mobile's Saenger Theaters, college performance
arts theaters and small and large civic centers.
New to the area, the Mississippi Gulf Coast
regularly brings in nationally known performers
at its casino theaters. Museums, art galleries,
and antiques are plentiful while shoppers can
choose from large malls and outlet stores to
small boutiques. Sports fans have embraced four
minor league ice hockey teams - the
"I-10" rivalry. Minor league baseball
and soccer also are popular. College sports fans
can root for three NCAA Divisions I schools
(Florida State, Florida A&M, South Alabama),
one Division II (West Florida), several NAIA
(Mobile, Spring Hill, William Carey) and more
than a dozen junior college and small Christian
schools. The region sponsors several professional
golf events including the PGA Senior Emerald
Coast Classic... Some of the biggest names in
sports hail from the area including 1996 Heisman
trophy winner Danny Weurfel, Emmitt Smith, Jay
Bell, Brett Favre, Roy Jones, Jr., Hank Aaron and
many, many others.
But, by far, the most popular
activity is setting up camp by our beautiful Gulf
beaches. All it takes is a beach chair, umbrella
and a cool drink... For more information on the
